This is a big week for the IRC, with our first General Membership Meeting of the semester, IRC Week at Saxby’s, the Conferences Program trip to UPMUNC, and the Global Hip Hop Concert this Saturday night. Check out below for more details. We hope to see you at some or all of these happenings!

1. GIRC General Membership Meeting

Tuesday, Nov 10, St Mary’s 111 at 8:30 p.m.
This upcoming Tuesday will be the first IRC General Membership Meeting of the year in St. Mary’s 111. This will be a great opportunity to hear about what has been going on with the club, reconnect with other IRC members, hear about current and upcoming opportunities, provide feedback on the club, and more! 2. GIRC/GIRA Executive Secretary Applications

Due Saturday, Nov 14 at 6 p.m.

The position of GIRC/GIRA Executive Secretary (ES) remains vacant. The application is attached to this email. The most important qualifications are dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to learn about both organizations.

The joint boards (GIRC and GIRA) will be accepting applications on a rolling basis. Applicants who send their application by Saturday November 14th at 6 PM will be considered for an interview during the following board meeting on Monday November 16th. We will continue interviews and applications the following week if necessary. Applicants are highly encouraged to apply before the first deadline if possible.The application is attached to this email and contains more information about the position. 3. Positions available on NAIMUN Security Staff

Are you still looking for a way to participate in the largest student-run Model UN conference in the world? The NAIMUN XLVII Security Staff has two openings on the team. The Security Staff works closely with the Secretariat to coordinate the logistical components of the conference related to the safety and security of our delegates, moderators, and staff. Serving on Security Staff is an innovative, in-depth way to get involved in NAIMUN, and all interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of experience level.

4. Global Hip-Hop: Exploring the Links Between Art and Activism

Monday, Nov 9 – Sunday, Nov 15

The week of November 9th – 15th, join the IRC, Georgetown Program Board, African Society, Pre-Med Society, WGTB Radio, SFS Academic Council, Hip-Hop Justified House and the Global Health House in a week-long celebration of the intersection of art and activism through music!

On Monday November 9th and Tuesday November 10th, there will be film screenings highlighting global health and music activism.

Thursday November 12th will be an open mic night in Uncommon Grounds.

Saturday, November 14th, there will be a panel discussion on music and film activism at 3 p.m. in McNeir Auditorium, and that evening. Beginning at 10 p.m., will be the main event in Bulldog Alley, a concert featuring the African Underground All-Stars, The Women’s Youth Drumming Empowerment Project, and student talent.

5. IRC Week at Saxby’s

Monday, Nov 9 – Friday, Nov 13

Take some time off studying and head over to Saxby’s for a coffee break, and see the IRC exhibited all over the cafe! Make sure to check out photos of this semester’s events, as well as info on our charity work with Save the Children and Nothing But Nets, and conferences trophies from as far back as 1967! Keep your eyes open for special offers and events put on in Saxby’s this week by the IRC!

6. ISD’s Key Global Issues Program – Piracy on the High Seas

Tuesday, November 10, ICC 7th Floor Executive Conference Room from Noon to 1:30 p.m.

Dr. Walter Anderson, the former chief of the U.S. State Department’s South Asia Division in the Office of Analysis for the Near East and South Asia, will be discussing piracy on the high seas, its recent resurgence and importance, and international efforts to combat it.

Since 2002 anti-piracy coalition forces from countries as diverse as the US, Russia, France, Malaysia and Japan have sent military vessels to the Gulf of Aden. Questions about international law have persisted, however, and the United Nations recently passed a resolution making it an international duty of member states to fight piracy—even allowing them to pursue Somali pirates into Somalia’s territorial waters. What does this mean for anti-piracy actions not just in the Gulf of Aden but elsewhere, such as the Indian Ocean and important Strait of Malacca?

7. Foreign Service Oral Exam Preparation Session

Thursday, Nov 12, ICC 7th Floor Executive Conference Room, 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Howard Schaffer, a retired U.S. ambassador who is senior counselor at the School of Foreign Service’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, and Dr. William Morgan, a senior Foreign Service officer now assigned to the State Department, will conduct a prep session for all present and former Georgetown students who plan to take the Foreign Service oral examination.

The session, which will include a video presentation, will be held in the ICC 7th Floor Executive Conference room on Thursday, November 12, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Amb. Schaffer urges all GIRC members who expect to take the examination to participate.

8. Stand Up for Peace

Saturday, Nov 14, Lohrfink Auditorium (Hariri Building), 7:30 p.m.

The NAS Arab Society of Georgetown University would like to invite you and your colleagues to attend the Stand Up for Peace comedy show that we will be holding on Saturday, November 14th at 7:30 p.m. in the Lohrfink Auditorium of the Rafik Hariri Building of the McDonough School of Business.

This show will bring together Arabs, Jews, Muslims, Christians, and people from various backgrounds through laughter and dialogue.  In addition to entertaining the audience, our two performers, Scott Blakeman and Dean Obeidallah, hope to dispel negative stereotypes of Middle-Eastern Americans, and to point to possibilities for the peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

9.GIRA and GIRC Board Meetings

Monday, Nov 9, ICC 203, 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.

The Boards of the International Relations Club and the Georgetown International Relations Association will hold meetings this week on Monday, Nov 9. The GIRA meeting will run from 9 p.m. – 10 p.m., and the GIRC meeting will run from 10 p.m. – 11 p.m. As a reminder, all board meetings are open to every member of the International Relations Club.
