Home Page Twitter Blog Facebook

Members of the Georgetown International Relations Club,

Thanks to all of you who came out to our big events this past week, especially the Embassy Reception and the WHITEFLAG Concert. Special thanks goes out to Christina Politi, Joan Xie, and Shuo Yan Tan for organizing the reception and Eitan Paul for organizing the concert. The Board hopes that larger events like these become a more regular feature of the IRC in years to come and we would appreciate any input from attendees.

We still have a number of opportunities and events as we close out the semester, so check them out below. Good luck with finals!

4. McMUN Applications

Due Wednesday, Dec 9 at 5 p.m.

From January 28 through January 31, 2010, the Georgetown International Relations Club Conferences Program will be traveling to Montreal for this year’s McGill Model United Nations (McMUN). All team members, whether they have attended conferences or not, are encouraged to apply by filling out the following application.

For those GIRC members who did not attend AGMUNC in the fall, there will be a second opportunity to establish team eligibility in the spring. As this year’s Spring AGMUNC will be held the weekend prior to McMUN, all those wishing to participate in conferences, even those who did not attend Fall AGMUNC, may apply for spots on the McMUN team.

Please also note that travel to the conference will be rigorous, with the bus leaving campus in the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan 28 and returning to campus in the early morning hours of Monday, Feb 2. Delegates will need to commit to traveling with the team in all but the most extraordinary circumstances, as options for traveling independently will be drastically limited compared to the conferences GIRC attends in the fall.

The deadline for submitting applications is Wednesday, Dec 9 at 5 p.m. (NO EXCEPTIONS). Good luck to all team applicants!

7. Participate in Hilltop Madness during NAIMUN XLVII!

Want to promote your club to an open and interested audience of nearly three thousand high school students? Then, come table at NAIMUN XLVII! On the evening of Friday, February 12th, NAIMUN will be hosting an event called Hilltop Madness to get our delegates (many of them potential Hoyas) excited about what Georgetown has to offer outside of the Model UN world. There will be performances by dance groups (like Jawani and the Irish Dancers) and tabling by a collection of the diverse groups at Georgetown (like the Hindu Student Association and the Ultimate Frisbee team).

If you are interested in having your club table, please contact Hilltop Madness coordinator Brendan Thompson (

programming@modelun.org).

8. One World Youth Project Info Session
Tuesday, Dec 8, ICC 113 at 8:15 p.m.

One World Youth Project (OWYP) is a grassroots organization that facilitates high quality partnerships between middle/high schools worldwide for the purpose of cultural exchange and community service toward the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.  Over the past 5 years OWYP has served 67 schools in 26 countries.  This year they are expanding to include universities in the program and Georgetown University has been chosen as the first OWYP university “hub”!

As a first step in creating this “hub”, OWYP is currently looking for undergrad students to serve as Project Ambassadors to oversee the relationship between DC public schools and their partners abroad and to further develop OWYP’s Georgetown hub. This exciting opportunity offers a great wealth of learning in areas of cultural education, community engagement, and global awareness.
