Talking Strategy at CSIS
On Friday, February 26th a group of eight IRCers visited the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) headquarters to engage in an informal discussion about a variety of topics, including the workings of a think tank, the competitive and collaborative relationships between different think tanks, and how to obtain an internship. Even on a Friday afternoon, the group brought interest, energy, and a multitude of questions to the conversation.
Panel Discussion on the Status of Women in Africa
On Monday, December 7, the IRC, alongside Women in Politics, sponsored a panel discussion on the status of women in Africa. The panelists, including Georgetown Law Professor Brian Kritz (SFS ‘94, L ‘97) and two fellows from the Georgetown Law Center’s Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) program, discussed the issues of female genital mutilation, rape, and other forms of sexual violence in Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, and Rwanda. The LAWA fellows, both of whom have worked as human rights professionals in Africa, acknowledged the challenges confronted by women’s rights advocates in Cameroon, Kenya, and Liberia. Professor Kritz, who helped develop Rwanda’s criminal statutes for rape and sexual violence in the aftermath of the genocide, discussed the legal challenges limiting women’s human rights work.

Sorour emphasized the significance of democracy in fostering economic, political and cultural growth in a developing country.
“There can be no democracy without human rights and vice versa,” Sorour said. “Democracy cannot be imposed, while human rights, as they are internationally agreed and recognized, should always be promoted and protected, through national collaboration with international mechanisms.”
Trick-or-Treating with the IRC on Embassy Row!
Last Friday, October 30, IRC members and numerous of other Georgetown students headed up to the Dupont area for a Georgetown tradition: trick-or-treating at your favorite foreign nation’s embassy. Crowded bus after crowded bus shuttled students up north to a designated list of embassies (though many students tried their luck at plenty of others, with mixed success). The fan favorite was pretty clear: South Korea’s “Korus House,” an informational/cultural building, was filled with authentic South Korean candy, incredibly enthusiastic attendants, and a photo op with a woman wearing an authentic Korean dress costing tens of thousands of dollars.
