Hoyas Take Montreal by Storm
In the wee hours of Thursday, Jan 28, the IRC’s Conferences Team traveled to Montreal, Canada for the McGill Model United Nations Assembly (McMUN 2010). After a weekend of intense debate (and after losing their voices screaming the Fight Song after watching the Duke game during a lunch break!) the Hoyas emerged victorious yet again, claiming the Best Large Delegation award.
Bearing the blue UN peacekeepers’ helmet as a token of their victory, the team of 45 returned to the Hilltop after an arduous 14-hour busride.
AGMUNC II Keeps Delegates on Their Toes
On Jan 23, about 45 IRC members met in White-Gravenor for AGMUNC II – the second All-Georgetown Model UN training conference. Grant Gibson and alumnus Matt Hipple led a joint crisis between Colombia, Venezuela, and the Organization of American States, in a fast-paced, hectic diplomatic frenzy.
Members of all skill levels, from those who had never participated in MUN before all the way up to senior delegates, had a blast as a minor disagreement on surveillance planes and confusion over a business contract evolved into a South American brawl of epic proportions.
Hoyas Win Best Large Delegation at UPMUNC!
35 of the IRC members traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this past weekend to participate in UPMUNC 2009, taking home the award of Best Large Delegation for the first time in two years. This was truly a team effort, given that 8 team members were awarded with Best Delegate and Georgetown was recognized on every single committee on which it was represented. Given the tremendous quality of the other teams at the conference and possibly the most difficult level of competition of any conference attended by Georgetown, this was an impressive feat.
Georgetown Team Wins Best Large Delegation at SCSY!
The GIRC Conferences Program took New Haven by storm this weekend, securing the Best Large Delegation award at the thirty-second annual Security Council Simulation at Yale (SCSY) by a resoundingly decisive margin.
This victory was the result of an extraordinary team effort that netted a remarkable nine gavels for a delegation of 19 members at a conference of 21 committees. Perhaps most importantly, the GIRC delegation consisted of six freshmen who contributed enormously to the team and gained invaluable crisis experience for future conferences. GIRA Delegation Wins “Best Large Delegation” Award at CMUNNY IV!
The Georgetown International Relations Association, Inc., is proud to announce an extraordinary performance by its delegation to the fourth annual Columbia Model United Nations in New York (CMUNNY IV). GIRA’s team of 12, which included a number of first-time delegates, won Best Large Delegation, narrowly edging out an excellent team representing Harvard University. The winner in the small delegation category was McGill University, followed by the George Washington University placing as runner-up. Perhaps most remarkably, all twelve members of GIRA’s team to CMUNNY IV were recognized for important contributions for their committee. Never in the recorded history of GIRA or GIRC has a team accomplished such a feat. This 100% award ratio is all the more impressive considering the number of first-time crisis delegates that traveled with this year’s CMUNNY team. Individual committee awards broke down as follows. Inaugural GU-GW Model UN Conference
This Saturday, October 3rd, the first annual GU-GW Model UN Conference took place at the GW Elliott School of International Affairs. Designed as a somewhat larger and more competitive opportunity for new delegates to gain experience, this conference also provided an opportunity for new Georgetown delegates to get to know George Washington competitors who will inevitably be with us at various conferences later in the year.
Unlike AGMUNC, where competitors were divided into three small committees based on size, all Georgetown and George Washington delegates were assigned to a single committee: Disarmament and International Security. Specifically, after a few minutes of speeches, the trade of small arms and light weaponry emerged as the chosen issue. Substantive debate focused on potential regulation of both the legal and illegal trade of small arms and light weaponry, along with the efficiency and effectiveness of various policy recommendations. Of particular controversy was the idea of an international gun registry database, an ambitious idea aimed at tracking legal gun purchases that was challenged as being unrealistic and placing excessive burden on low-resource countries by a variety of delegations. AGMUNC Prepares IRCers for Conference Circuit
The 2009 All-Georgetown Model United Nations Conference (AGMUNC) was held on Saturday in White Gravenor Hall. Over 100 students participated in the annual conference, which serves as training for the IRC’s traveling Conferences program. Well-informed, eager delegates, most of whom were freshman, received the opportunity to engage in debate from their countries’ varying perspectives to ultimately resolve difficult yet relevant issues that presently face the United Nations.

Small Delegation, Big Win — CHOMUN 2009
The Georgetown Model UN team traveled on the weekend of April 9-12 to Chicago, Il., for the last trip of the year to debate at Chicago Model United Nations Conference (ChoMUN), one of the most difficult conferences on the Model UN circuit.
VIC(S)tory in Virginia!

Georgetown University once again emerged victorious in the Virginia International Crisis Simulation at the University of Virginia, taking place from March 26-29.
The team boasted a multitude of awards, emphasizing the individual effort put in by each and every delegate. This feat is even more remarkable given that many were unable to fully participate in the first committee session due to travel delays.
This is Georgetown’s fourth consecutive victory at VICS. The following is a list of individual awards won by the members of the team.
